5.14 Flame and arc resistance. Materials used in military equipment shall, in the end item configuration, be noncombustible or fire retardant in the most hazardous conditions of atmosphere, pressure, and temperature to be expected in the application. Fire retardant additives may be used provided they do not adversely affect the specified performance requirements of the basic materials. Fire retardance shall not be achieved by use of nonpermanent additives to the basic material. For further guidance, refer to MIL-STD-454. Arc resistant materials shall conform to table X. The materials listed have passed the minimum requirements of 115 seconds when subjected to the arc-resistant test of ASTM D
495 and are listed in approximate order of arc resistance.
